ESG reporting in Hong Kong is no longer a discretionary exercise. For companies listed on HKEX, mandatory ESG disclosure requirements have been progressively tightening since 2015, with HKEX progressively moving towards mandatory climate-related disclosures aligned with the ISSB’s IFRS S2 standards — a phased transition that is already underway for larger listed companies.
For boards and investor relations teams, this creates a dual challenge. Meeting regulatory requirements accurately. And communicating the story behind the data in a way that sophisticated investors, analysts, and ESG ratings agencies can understand and act on.
HKEX ESG Reporting Requirements: Where Things Stand in 2026
HKEX has been steadily aligning its ESG reporting framework with international standards. The key developments boards need to understand for 2026 are:
Mandatory IFRS S2 climate disclosures. HKEX has signalled the transition to climate-related financial disclosures aligned with the ISSB’s IFRS S2 standard, covering governance, strategy, risk management, and metrics and targets — including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Larger listed companies are moving into mandatory reporting first, with wider rollout following.
Assurance expectations. The trend towards independent assurance of ESG data is accelerating. Investors and regulators increasingly expect that reported ESG metrics are independently verifiable. This has direct implications for how data is collected, documented, and presented in the annual and ESG report.
Integrated reporting. HKEX has encouraged movement towards integrated reporting, combining financial and non-financial performance in a coherent narrative rather than treating ESG as a standalone appendix.
Design’s Role: Beyond Compliance
Regulatory compliance sets the floor for ESG reporting. The companies that use their ESG report most effectively treat it as a strategic brand and investor relations asset — not just a disclosure obligation.
The best ESG reports do several things at once. They meet disclosure requirements accurately. They tell a compelling narrative about the company’s sustainability journey — where it has come from, what it is doing, and where it is going. They make complex data understandable to a non-specialist reader through strong data visualisation. And they present climate commitments and transition strategies credibly to sophisticated ESG investors and analysts.
Design is not cosmetic in this context. How data is structured, presented, and visualised directly affects how it is received, compared, and remembered.
Data Visualisation for Climate and ESG Metrics
Climate and sustainability data is inherently complex. Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Energy intensity ratios. Water consumption and recycling rates. Waste diversion rates. Supply chain emissions. Social metrics covering workforce diversity, training hours, and community investment.
Presenting this data accurately and legibly to a non-specialist reader — while maintaining the rigour required for assurance — requires specialist data visualisation design. Generic charting templates do not work at this level of complexity.
At Cheddar Media, we design custom chart systems, infographic frameworks, and visual data narratives built specifically for each client’s ESG data structure. We work closely with sustainability and IR teams to ensure that every visualisation is accurate, readable, and strategically coherent with the broader report narrative.
What Boards Should Be Asking
As ESG reporting becomes a board-level governance matter, these are the questions directors should be asking of their management teams and communications advisors:
Is our ESG report meeting current HKEX requirements — and are we prepared for IFRS S2 mandatory disclosure? Are our ESG metrics structured in a way that supports independent assurance? Is our data presented clearly enough for sophisticated ESG investors and ratings agencies to interpret accurately? Does our ESG report tell a coherent strategic narrative — or is it a data dump with a cover?
Cheddar Media’s ESG Reporting Work
Cheddar Media has produced ESG report design for Hong Kong clients for over 15 years — for organisations including HKEX, ALBA Group Asia, ADM Capital Foundation, Genting, Airport Authority Hong Kong, and Swire Coca-Cola.
Our process covers the full report lifecycle: narrative strategy, data visualisation, photography direction, print layout, digital PDF production, and microsite development. We work as a genuine strategic and creative partner — not a production house.
For listed companies facing the IFRS S2 transition and evolving investor expectations, the quality of ESG communications design is increasingly a differentiator. Talk to the Cheddar Media team about your next ESG or annual report.
